A group of plants with open, 5-petalled flowers, found in grassland, scrub and woodland habitats, and in many cultivated forms in gardens. Also known as cranesbills, because their fruit ends in a long straight pointed beak.

Meadow cranesbill is more common in the wild further north in Britain, but varieties are widely planted in gardens. Its cousin, wood cranesbill can be found in damp woods in north-west Essex.
